Police: Discarded cigarette butts led to kidnapping, sexual assault suspect's arrest

WEBSTER, Mass. — Webster Police say they have made an arrest in the alleged abduction of a 12-year-old girl.

On May 31, Webster Police said a girl was allegedly kidnapped from a local park, driven to Connecticut, and sexually assaulted. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Joshua Besaw of Thompson, Conn., reportedly told the girl he needed help with a friend and convinced her to get into the car.

After the assault, he drove the girl to Dudley, Mass. where he dropped her off. The girl borrowed a phone from a stranger and called her parents who came to pick her up.

On Wednesday, Webster Police told Boston 25 News Besaw has been arrested.

Connecticut authorities say investigators surveying Besaw collected discarded cigarettes butts that allegedly matched DNA evidence collected from the victim.

Besaw is charged with kidnapping and transportation of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.
