Wayland police searching for home invasion suspect

WAYLAND, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Wayland police are searching for a man they believe attacked a woman inside her home Sunday night.

The man entered a home on West Plain Street through an unlocked door just before 10 p.m., according to police, and grabbed the victim, a 23-year-old woman, in her kitchen. Police believe the attack was random and unprovoked.

The woman said at that point she screamed, alerting other people in the home and forcing the suspect to flee.

So when she screamed they came to her assistance and he left very quickly after he entered the house," Wayland Police Chief Bob Irving said. "We're very concerned that somebody would enter somebody's house and approach and assault a person and we're trying to find out who this person is."

Police were able to use the shirt the victim ripped off the suspect to track his scent down Main Street toward Natick using a trained search dog before the trail went cold.

About 15 minutes before the attack, police believe the man happened to walk by a police cruiser parked at Finnerty's restaurant. That person was caught on the cruiser's dash cam walking down West Plain Street toward the house.

Police are not sure what the man's intent was, but one theory they have is that the man may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
