Everett man charged with OUI after crashing into utility pole, car and homes

EVERETT, Mass. — Everett police have arrested Jose Pineda, the driver of the SUV that caused such damage on Irving Street in Everett. He is now facing an OUI-related charge.

Crews towed Pineda’s SUV away Friday morning. The rear bumper was crushed in the center from the utility pole that snapped from the force.

Overnight, crews worked well into the morning hours to replace the power pole that had been snapped in half.

Neighbors at the scene Thursday afternoon say they heard all the commotion as an SUV plowed into a parked car, parked mini-van, a blue house and then into the driver’s own home.

It was a screech, a bang multiple times. It was pretty scary,” said witness Nanette Rodriguez. “When I looked out the window I saw the truck backing into my neighbor’s driveway and then going forward again."

The building inspector says the SUV knocked foundational blocks clear to the other side of the basement and almost bust the gas line.

“National grid had to cut the line because of the damage. The car was in the building and we were afraid when we pulled the car out, that the blocks would fall and damage the line, cause a gas leak, possible explosion,” said Everett Building Inspector Martin Furtado.

The building inspector says an explosion would have been catastrophic, as people were still in the multi-family home at the time of the crash.

Pineda is expected to be arraigned Friday.
