CLINTON, Mass. — The teenage boy who died after he was pulled from a pond in Clinton Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a Clinton High School freshman, according to the school's superintendent.
In a statement posted on the district's website, Steven C. Meyer, the superintendent of Clinton Public Schools, identified the teen as freshman Rafael Perez, saying the and offered support to his family and friends who "grieve this tragic event."
Emergency crews responded to the area known as Blueberry Island near South Meadow Pond around 5 p.m. after receiving several calls for an unresponsive male and possible drowning victim.
Police and fire, with the help of a local resident, took a boat over to Perez and began life-saving procedures and then brought him to the shoreline off Pine Street. He was then sent by ambulance to Clinton Hospital where he later died.
Clinton Police and State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
Additional guidance staff will be available Wednesday at Clinton High School to support students and staff, the superintendent said.
