BROCKTON, Mass. — Brockton Police said two people died and another suffered life-threatening injuries in a wrong-way crash Sunday morning.
Police were called shortly after 3 a.m. with reports of a head-on crash on Route 27 in the area of Route 24, according to a release by the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
Police found two cars in the left lane on Route 27 north: a blue 2009 Volkswagen Jetta facing a southernly direction and a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe facing a northernly direction.
The 30-year-old female driver of the Jetta was brought to Good Samaritan Hospital before being transferred to Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries.
The 66-year-old female driver of the Hyundai was brought to Good Samaritan Hospital where she died. Her passenger, a 39-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation shows that the driver of the Jetta, 30, was driving south in the wrong direction on Route 27 north when she slammed into the Hyundai, which was driving north in the left lane on Route 27 north.
A third car, a 2000 red Chevy Tahoe, was driving in the right lane of Route 27 northbound when it crashed into the Jetta after the initial crash. The male driver was not hurt and refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the release.
None of the victims are being identified yet and the crash is under investigation.
