Tennessee teen shoots fireworks at Nashville police helicopter

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee teenager is accused of shooting a firework mortar at a Nashville police helicopter, authorities said.

John Schmid, 18, of Franklin, was charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on an officer/responder, according to Davidson County online court records. His bail was set at $25,000.

According to Nashville police, a detective allegedly witnessed a man use a mortar tube to launch fireworks toward Air One, a helicopter of the Metro Nashville Police Department, on Friday night, WZTV reported.

Police said Schmid attempted to leave, but an officer arrived on the scene and took him into custody, the television station reported.

Police called in a bomb squad to remove the fireworks, according to WZTV.

The helicopter was patrolling an area of Nashville as part of a counter street racing initiative, WSMV reported. The aircraft was about 500 feet above the ground, the television station reported.

Schmid is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, according to online court records.
