Teen arrested after stealing $1 million from Kroger, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia teen is accused of stealing nearly $1 million from a Kroger grocery store, investigators said.

Gwinnett Police said Tre Brown, 19, an employee at the store, stole $980,000 during a two-week period through a scheme where he made returns on non-existent purchases, WSB-TV reported.

Brown made more than 40 returns that ranged in price from $75 to $87,000, police said. He put the returns on credit cards. Brown then used the money to buy clothes, guns and two cars. He totaled one of the vehicles before he was arrested.

The fraudulent transactions were noticed by a corporate employee who contacted police.

Brown was arrested and charged with theft by taking. He was released from jail on $11,200 bail, according to jail records.

A substantial amount of money was recovered during his arrest but it is unclear how much.
