GLEN BURNIE, Md. — Police are searching for answers after a man discovered a newborn baby girl near a bicycle path in Maryland.
According to WMAR and WBAL, the incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday near Greenway Road in Glen Burnie. Ted Rutherford was walking his dog along the path when he heard a noise from the woods, stopped to investigate and found the infant, whose umbilical cord had not been removed, WMAR reported.
A neighbor called Anne Arundel County police, who rushed the baby to a nearby hospital, according to WBAL.
“Thankfully, the child is still alive,” police spokesman Marc Limansky told reporters. “It was suffering from some injuries due to being in contact with the brush, some bushes – scrapes, abrasions, that sort of thing.”
Police said investigators are now trying to determine who abandoned the baby.
Maryland’s “safe haven” law allows adults to leave a newborn at police and fire stations or hospitals without facing criminal charges, the news outlets reported.
