Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary Saturday and took to social media to share their love and ask a favor of fans and supporters.
“I love [Barack Obama] for his smile, his character and his compassion. So grateful to have him as a partner through everything life throws at us,” Michelle Obama captioned a photo on Instagram. “This year, we have a request for you — pick one person in your life who might not vote and make sure they do.”
The 44th president shared a similar message:
“Even with everything going on, I wanted to take a moment to say happy anniversary to the love of my life. Every day with [Michelle Obama] makes me a better husband, a better father, and a better human. This year, while we appreciate all your well-wishes, what we’d really love is for each of you to reach out to one person in your life who might not vote. Help them get registered. Help them make a plan to cast their ballot.”
Together, their posts received more than 5.7 million likes.
The Obamas first met in 1989 at a law firm in Chicago. Michelle Robinson, 25, served as a mentor to 29-year-old Barack Obama, who had temporarily stepped away from his work as a community organizer.
“Because I went to Harvard and he went to Harvard, and the firm thought, ‘Oh, we’ll hook these two people up,’” Michelle Obama said of the firm’s decision to make her the future president’s mentor.
“In the luckiest break of my life, [Michelle] was assigned to be my adviser,” he told O, The Oprah Magazine in 2007. “I remember being struck by how tall and beautiful she was ... I asked her out. She refused. I kept asking. She kept refusing."
“Not once, though, did I think about him as someone I’d want to date," Michelle Obama wrote in her memoir, “Becoming.” "For one thing, I was his mentor at the firm. I’d also recently sworn off dating altogether, too consumed with work to put any effort into it.”
Before long, she gave him a chance, and the two began dating. They became engaged two years later.
They were married in 1992 and had their first daughter, Malia, in 1998.
