Man with Down syndrome gets job with UPS as delivery person

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — For a man who many thought he would never get a driver’s license or graduate from college, Jake Pratt is showing the skeptics they know nothing.

Pratt, 21, has Down syndrome and despite challenges people think he might face, he and his family are celebrating his new job.

When he was born, his doctor said he would not have a typical life. but his family would not listen.

“My family has always embraced the philosophy that Jake is no different from you or I and that there are no limits on what he can accomplish,” his sister, Amy Hyde, told People magazine.

Pratt was recently hired by UPS as a delivery person, WVTM reported.

Pratt isn’t driving the large trucks but he is making sure that packages get delivered to where they’re supposed to go.

Hyde posted a photo of her brother proudly wearing his uniform standing in front of his truck, thanking the company for her brother’s opportunity.

One job is not enough for Pratt.

He also works at a golf course from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. every morning, Hyde said.

“This opportunity to work for UPS means everything to Jake because it is his dream to be able to live independently. He has achieved so much, but none of it would be possible without people embracing him and giving him a chance,” Hyde told People magazine.

“Jake is so worthy and capable, so it’s just awesome for others to be able to see that. He has done a lot to break barriers and raise awareness that people with Down syndrome can accomplish anything they set their mind to,” she went on to tell the magazine.
