A father and son fishing off the southern coast of Maine caught a rare, bright blue lobster on Thursday morning.
But the large marine crustacean will not be on the dinner table of Luke Rand or his father, Mark Rand. Instead, the lobster will take up residence in a tank at their family’s restaurant, Becky’s Diner, in Portland, WGME-TV reported. The restaurant is run by Becky Rand, Luke’s mother and Mark’s wife, according to the television station.
“We’ve never pulled one this color or even seen one to throw back,” Luke Rand, 36, of Falmouth, told the Portland Press Herald. Luke Rand, who said he has been fishing for 20 years and serves as a sternman on his father’s boat, said the lobster was caught beyond Peaks Island in Casco Bay.
Mark Rand, has been fishing for more than 40 years, the newspaper reported.
Luke Rand said the lobster was legal and a healthy-looking male, the Press Herald reported. He and his father will keep the lobster alive by feeding it fish before moving it into Becky’s diner for customers to view.
The restaurant has been a popular spot for politicians and performers. Past patrons include Taylor Swift, first lady Jill Biden, Tipper Gore, Bobby Brown and former President Bill Clinton, according to the newspaper.
Now Becky’s has a new attraction.
“It’s not something that you see every day,” Luke Rand said.
According to the University of Maine Lobster Institute, the odds of finding a blue lobster are 1 in 2 million.
