According to KDVR and KMGH, the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at a home on West First Avenue in Golden, Colorado. Golden police responded to a report of an animal bite and arrived to find two dogs attacking the woman in the backyard.

“During the rescue, Golden police officers placed themselves between the dogs and the victim,” police said in a news release Wednesday. “Officers challenged both dogs verbally and ultimately utilized tasers and less lethal shotguns to attempt to create distance between the victim and dogs. Each time the officers approached the victim, the dogs would circle the officers. Less lethal options were not effective.”

After more officers arrived, they managed to hold the dogs back and bring the woman to paramedics inside the home, the release said. Crews rushed her to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but she died days later, police announced Monday.

Police said a 12-year-old boy – the woman’s grandson – also was seriously wounded and sought help at a neighbor’s house, according to KMGH. The child, who was taken to a nearby hospital and later flown to Children’s Hospital, has been released, police said.

The two pit bulls, which were family pets, have been euthanized, police said.

Police have not released the names of the woman or her grandson, according to the news outlets. The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
