The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that new technology installed at the jail intercepted the narcotics. Detectives said their investigation showed an inmate at the jail, Alexander McKay, and his girlfriend, Christine Ammon, were planning to convert drugs into infused paper, and then disguise the paper as legal mail.

Investigators said as soon as the mail arrived at the jail, it was intercepted and sent to a crime lab for testing, WPEC reported.

Deputies said the crime lab found the paper tested positive for MDMA. Fingerprints on the mail led detectives to Ammon, deputies said in the news release.

McKay, who was in jail for felony charges including grand theft auto, faces multiple new charges, including the introduction of contraband to a detention facility and the sale and delivery of narcotics. Ammon, who was on probation, faces the same charges.
