‘The Crown’ renewed for sixth season

Netflix has surprised fans of “The Crown.”

After saying the series that follows Queen Elizabeth II’s life was going to wrap up with season five, the streaming platform said there will be a sixth season.

“As we started to discuss the story lines for Season 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” “The Crown” writer and creator, Peter Morgan, told The New York Times in a statement.

Morgan said it will allow the storytellers to go into more detail about the same time period they had planned to cover.

Three seasons have aired. The fourth has yet to be released, with no airdate announced.

The series has switched the actresses who have portrayed Queen Elizabeth II.

When it started in 2016, Clair Foy wore the crown during the first two seasons, focusing on the queen’s early years, the Times reported.

Season three featured Olivia Colman as Elizabeth during the ’60s and ’70s. She will also play the queen through season four which will focus on the ’80s including the period of Princess Diana’s introduction and dominance in the royal family.

The fifth season will be led by Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II bringing the story somewhat closer to the present era. But the show will not dive into the relationship between the royal family and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, US Weekly reported.
