Hostage situation ends after 3 police officers shot responding to house call in Texas

CEDAR PARK, Texas — Three police officers were shot Sunday afternoon responding to a Cedar Park, Texas, call that ended with a suspect barricaded in the home.

All three officers have been transported to a hospital, where they are listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, KVUE reported.

Here are the latest updates:

Update 10:25 a.m. EDT Aug. 17: Police said a hostage situation involving a man suspected of shooting three police officers ended peacefully Monday morning.

“The suspect and last hostage have come out of the home peacefully,” Cedar Park police said in an update posted on social media at 9 a.m. local time.

An hour earlier, police held a press conference and announced that the man had released his brother, sister and a family pet. He had remained barricaded in the home with his mother, officials said.

Police had been in negotiations with the man for more than 16 hours since the officers were wounded Sunday afternoon at the home in Cedar Park, interim police chief Mike Harmon said.

The man’s mother had called police after he kicked in the door of the home. His name wasn’t immediately released by police.

Update 7:59 a.m. EDT Aug. 17: Police took to Twitter early Monday to urge residents near the scene of the standoff to stay inside their homes.

“If you live on Natalie Cove in the Heritage Park subdivision, you need to stay inside your home,” Cedar Park police tweeted about 4:30 a.m. CDT. “It’s still unsafe to leave as we are working an active scene involving a suspect barricaded inside his home. Please do not leave until we say it is safe to do so.”

Update 11:22 p.m. EDT Aug. 16: The suspect remains barricaded in the home with three family members.

Mike Harmon, Cedar Park’s interim police chief, said during a Sunday night news conference that the incident started after the suspect’s mother called police, saying her son had kicked in a door and was being aggressive.

Responding officers were met with gunfire once they entered the house and returned gunfire, but it remains unknown if the suspect was injured in the shootings, Harmon said.

According to KVUE, the suspect is in his mid-20s and is barricaded in the home with his mother, a juvenile and one other person of unknown age. The suspect appears to be dealing with mental health issues, police said.

Harmon confirmed the suspect had gone live on social media while barricaded inside the house. A video sent to KVUE by witnesses showed someone pleading with a man on the phone to go outside and get in the ambulance because he was bleeding.

“It’s our goal to bring this to a peaceful resolution, as everybody knows. We don’t want to see anybody else getting hurt,” Harmon said during the news conference.

“Please come out and surrender yourself peacefully, so we can resolve this situation tonight,” he added.

Original report: Police also tweeted that the situation “remains a very active scene,” and the subject is not yet in custody, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Gov. Greg Abbott expressed his support for the officers Sunday evening, the newspaper reported.

“Our hearts are with the police officers who were injured while protecting the Cedar Park community this afternoon,” he said in a statement. “We must never take for granted the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers, and the state of Texas stands ready to provide the support and resources needed to bring justice to those involved.”
