Some crash victims had to be extricated from their vehicles, WAOW reported, noting that the crashes occurred just after 4 p.m.
Video showed other people, including children, getting out of their vehicles and walking, apparently uninjured, as they waited for help to arrive, CNN reported.
The pileups forced the closure of all lanes of U.S. 51 near Wausau for about four hours, WAOW reported.
According to CNN, the National Weather Service urged motorists in the area to exercise caution late Friday because winter conditions were creating hazardous travel due to “quick reductions in visibility.”
