BROCKTON, Mass. — A string of car break-ins at Commuter Rail stops around Boston is prompting transit police to take action.
Thursday, they put up their Skywatch Tower in Brockton after four cars were broken into at the Campello Commuter Rail Stop.
The lift high above the stop contains a perch for four cameras and even an officer to sit inside. It’s the first step from transit police in cracking down on a string of daytime car break-ins that left commuters footing the bill for the damage.
Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, transit police got the call. There were four cars with windows blown out, the insides of the cars ransacked and glass all over the ground.
This isn’t the first commuter rail parking lot to be hit. Other towns include Sharon, Kingston, Foxborough and Whitman.
Transit police so far have not said if they have any leads or said if the break-ins in Commuter Rail lots in other towns might be connected. But people who use the Campello station lot on the regular have their theories.
“Kids,” commuter John Ferron said. “Don’t have any respect for anything.”
And while officers work to deter future crimes, commuters are encouraging common sense. Don’t leave your valuables in plain sight.
“People leave money and stuff in their truck, so they’re probably going for that,” Ferron said.
