All lanes re-opened on Route 24 in Fall River after fatal gas tanker rollover

FALL RIVER, Mass. — One person is dead and another was seriously injured in a crash involving a tanker truck carrying gas and a passenger car on Route 24 north in Fall River.

State Police say the truck was pulling a tanker filled with gasoline when it rolled over just after 5 a.m. Thursday and hit a car. The driver of the truck, a 67-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver's identity has not been released.

The driver of the car that was hit, a 32-year-old man, has been taken to the hospital with injuries, but officials say he is in stable condition.

About 100 gallons of fuel leaked from the tanker. Fall River Fire and MassDOT had crews at the scene throughout the morning and into the afternoon working to contain the spill with foam and sand.

Both directions of Route 24 were closed by Exit 8, snarling the morning commute, but the southbound side has since reopened.

All lanes were re-opened by 5 p.m. the same day.

One lane on the northbound side remained closed for most of the day as crews work to clean the debris and remove the truck from the roadway. The left lane was re-opened to traffic at around 3:40 p.m., according to State Police.

The right lane and the ramp from Airport Road, or Exit 8 to Rt. 24 remained closed until just past 5 p.m.

Police do not know what caused the truck to overturn. The investigation is ongoing.
