Sutton's first day of school delayed

SUTTON, Mass. (AP) — Students in Sutton are getting some extra summer vacation because the central Massachusetts town's $60 million middle school/high school construction project is four months behind schedule.

Superintendent Theodore Friend says instead of starting Wednesday as scheduled, kindergartners through eighth-graders will start next Tuesday, while high school students will start Sept. 9.

Middle school students will be placed in elementary schools as well as modular classrooms. Ninth- and 10th-graders will also be placed in modular classrooms, while 11th and 12th graders will take classes at a local church.

Friend blames manpower issues for the construction company's inability to reach its April 1 deadline to complete the new middle school.

He tells The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/184fncK ) parents will be impressed when the new schools finally open.
