One dead, one seriously injured after four-car crash in Middleborough

A serious crash on I-495 in Middleborough left a Brockton woman dead and another person transported to the hospital on Friday, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Police identified 57-year old Anita Stevens as the woman killed in the four-vehicle crash that occurred north of Exit 6 in Middleborough Friday afternoon.

Preliminary investigation shows Stevens was driving on the ramp from Route 44 to I-495 northbound, when she lost control of her vehicle before it spun out and became stationary. Her vehicle, a GMC Envoy, was then struck head-on by a 55-year-old Wareham woman.

The Wareham woman's car spun into the left travel lane, hitting a 55-year-old North Easton man's car, which then struck a 37-year-old Centerville man's car.

Stevens was transported to Morton Hospital in Taunton, where she was pronounced deceased. The Wareham woman was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton for serious injuries.

The cause of the crash still remains under investigation.

The department originally said around 5 p.m. to expect delays in the area with just the breakdown lane open.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation provided an update about an hour later, saying there was a four-mile slowdown due to the crash.

They also said it would probably be an additional hour that the breakdown lane would be the lone lane open for travel.
