Second human case of West Nile virus in 2013 found in Norfolk County man

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) – A second human case of West Nile virus in Massachusetts in 2013 has been found in Norfolk County man, the Mass. Dept. of Public Health announced Wednesday.

The man, who is in his 30s, was diagnosed with the disease in late August. He was hospitalized, but has since been discharged.

The Mass. Department of Public Health is conducting an investigation to determine where the man was likely exposed to the infected mosquitoes. An updated assessment of WNV risk areas will be available at the conclusion of the investigation.

Officials urge residents to take all necessary precautions over the Labor Day weekend.

The first human case of WNV this year was announced Monday. The disease was found in  Plymouth County man. He is in his 70s.

In 2012, 33 cases of WNV were detected.

Last week health officials said a Norfolk County woman in her 80s who recently died was the first case of Eastern equine encephalitis this year. There were seven cases in Massachusetts last year, and at least two deaths.
