All Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles branches have reopened Monday after a three-day closure.
RMV locations were closed Thursday through Sunday in order to install a new computer system that would allow Massachusetts to issue a Real ID.
The federal government passed a law in 2005 calling for a more secure form of identification after terrorists were able to get fake IDs before the Sept. 11 attacks.

As of March 26, 2018, RMV branches will now be able to issue Real ID, however you won't need one until 2020. Starting in October 2020, air travelers won't be able to board a flight with a normal license - only a passport or Real ID will be accepted. If you have an active passport, and don't mind carrying it, you will never need a Real ID.
In order to get a Real ID, you need to prove United States citizenship, or lawful presence, and Massachusetts residency.
