Report: Jet carrying Boston doctors ‘going slower’ than usual before fatal crash

BOSTON — The small jet carrying two Boston doctors was going more slowly than usual as it took off from a Connecticut runway before its fatal crash earlier this month, a preliminary investigation report found.

The report released by the National Transportation Safety Board said witnesses described a puff of smoke as the plane struggled to gain altitude before crashing into a manufacturing company building in Farmington on Sept. 2.

Courtney Haviland, 33, and Will Shrauner, 32, were killed in the crash along with the two pilots. Four people on the ground were also injured. Haviland and Shrauner were married and had one son. Haviland was also pregnant with a baby girl, a family spokesperson confirmed.

Haviland worked for Mass General Hospital for Children.

“She was universally loved by her colleagues and patients and lived a life full of meaning,” said Physician-in-Chief Ronald Kleinman shortly after the tragedy. “Her bright smile and the twinkle in her eye left an indelible mark on all who met her, as did her boundless kindness and compassion.”

Boston Medical Center said of Shrauner, “Will, a second-year fellow at Boston Medical Center, was well known as an outstanding educator, physician, colleague and friend to many.”
