Relief fund established for Revere tornado victims

REVERE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com)— A Revere tornado relief fund has been set up to help local residents and business owners pay for damage caused by Monday's EF2 tornado.

Fox 25 Sharman Sacchetti was at Revere City Hall on Friday, where Mayor Dan Rizzo announced the plans for the Revere tornado relief fund.  Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Ed Markey, former District Attorney Gerry Leone also joined Rizzo in the announcement.

Former DA Gerry Leone was appointed administrator of funds. Leone said all residents and business owners must meet a certain criteria in order to receive donation funds. According to Sacchetti, Leone said transparency, accountability and flexibility are important because people are giving from their heart.

Rizzo asked public and corporate donors to contribute as much as they can.

The EF2 tornado that ripped through Revere on Monday left behind a two-mile path of damage in the town, leaving 13 homes uninhabitable. Costs are estimated to be about $2 million. Many insurance companies are said to only cover a portion of the damage costs.

The City Hall was one of the buildings that suffered the most damage with multiple broken windows and several other damages to the surrounding area. Officials said 65 homes were damaged.

Over $7,000 has been raised so far. Revere looks to raise at least $1 million to help people affected by the tornado pay for damages and rebuild the city.

Donations can be made at the United Bank on 310 Broadway in Revere. They can also be mailed to: Revere Tornado Relief Fund, PO Box 496, Revere, MA 02151.
