Red Sox slugger David Ortiz suspended one game for making contact with umpire

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has been suspended for one game after making contact with an umpire during Boston's loss to the Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternoon.

Ortiz will appeal the suspension.

In the 5th inning of Sunday's game, Ortiz checked his swing during an at-bat. Third base umpire Jerry Meals, upon appeal, called it a strike, which ultimately led to a heated argument between Ortiz and the umpiring crew. Ortiz made contact with home plate John Tumpane during the argument and was ejected from the game.  Daniel Nava took over for Ortiz and assumed his 1-2 count in the at-bat.

The Red Sox are scheduled to play Tampa Bay Monday night in St. Petersburg at 7:10pm. It's expected Ortiz will be in the lineup as he appeals the suspension.

Ortiz has been suspended twice before in his career.

In July, 2004, he was suspended for three games after he threw bats on the field following his ejection from a game against the Angels. The bats almost hit members of the umpiring crew.

In July, 2011, Ortiz was suspended for four games for his role in a bench-clearing brawl with Orioles pitcher Kevin Grigg.

He was not suspended in July, 2013 despite destroying a pair of dugout phones at Camden Yards with a bat following an ejection for arguing balls and strikes against the Orioles.
