Arrest made in NH officer shootings

MANCHESTER, NH — A man is facing attempted capital murder charges after allegedly shooting two Manchester police officers early Friday morning.

Just after 2:00 a.m. Friday, Officer Ryan Hardy reported that he saw a man walking on Second Street who matched the description of a man who robbed a Shell gas station Thursday. The description said that the man had long hair and was wearing a trench coat.

Hardy approached the man, later identified as Ian MacPherson, and was allegedly shot twice; once in the face and once in the torso.

When Hardy radioed for assistance, two other officers responded and began tracking the suspect with a K-9.

MacPherson, 32, was located near Putnam Street and then allegedly began firing and saying ''I'm your man."

Officer Matthew O'Connor was stuck in the leg, and MacPherson ran into the woods.

Just before 5 a.m., officers say they spotted MacPherson in the Bartlett Street area. He was taken into custody and has since been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.

A shelter in place order was lifted around 10:30 a.m., and shortly after noon police said they were no longer looking for a suspect. Police said the shelter-in-place was extended because they were following up on leads and wanted to make sure the public was safe.

"There was still a lot going on. We still have to make a case against the individual, and that was the delay. We still wanted to search the area for friends he may," said the Manchester Police Chief Nick Willard.

Hardy is being treated at a Boston hospital in order to be closer to family. O'Connor is being treated at a hospital in New Hampshire.

Hardy, 27,  grew up in Goffstown, N.H. and previously worked for the Derry Police Department.

O'Connor, 28, is a veteran who  fought in Iraq prior to becoming a police officer.

N.H. Governor Maggie Hassan thanked the officers for their bravery and service in a tweet sent out Friday morning.
