WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – The pilot of a small aircraft died Saturday morning when the plane crashed during takeoff.
The crash occurred around 8 a.m. at the Worcester Regional Airport; the Mooney M20 single-engine aircraft veered to the right and crashed into trees on the airport property.
"Little plane... little single engine plane just kind of came up over the trees then turned sideways and completely over then just plummeted straight down," said witness Dylon Deboise.
The pilot, 66-year-old Gary Weller of Putnam Connecticut, was the only person on the plane at the time of the crash. EMS and fire officials treated Weller, but he died on scene. There was no flight plan filed and his destination is unknown at this time, said District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Weller was a dentist in Putnam, Connecticut. According to his business web page, he had a passion for flying and he used to fly for Eastern Airlines and U.S. Airways.
"This is a difficult day for all of us at Worcester Regional Airport. We are very sad to hear that the pilot has passed and we wish his family and friends solace in this time," said Massport in a statement.
The NTSB will take over the investigation to determine the cause.
