Police say the man who fled a traffic stop, leading police on a chase before crashing into a telephone pole in Haverhill Saturday, has died.
Merrimac police say one of its officers stopped a vehicle with an expired New Hampshire registration on West Main Street Saturday afternoon. When the officer walked up to the car, the driver sped off. The officer got back into his cruiser and took off after the suspect, who was driving fast onto Route 110 into Haverhill.
The officer couldn’t catch up to the suspect until he rounded a corner and saw the suspect had crashed into a telephone pole on Atwood Road.
The driver was seriously injured and was flown to a Boston-area hospital where he died. Police say they have not yet been able to identify the driver and once they do, they will release his name after family has been notified.
"This is obviously an unfortunate outcome. We are actively investigating and hope to learn more about the circumstances surrounding this incident as soon as possible," said Merrimac Chief Eric M. Shears.
The Essex County DA, Merrimac police, Haverhill police, Massachusetts State Police and the MSP Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating.
