Parents advised to perform CORI check on babysitters hired online

ARLINGTON, Mass. — After several recent high profile cases involving alleged negligence by babysitters and nannies, police are providing guidance for parents.

In Arlington this week, a babysitter hired through Care.com was arrested after she was allegedly found wandering in the street while drunk and high.

For a fee of $25, parents can conduct a background check on an individual through the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) system.

"While the overwhelming majority of child care providers are more than responsible and of good character, one should never assume that is the case,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said.

The form to obtain a CORI check can be found on the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services website after clicking the CORI link in the left hand column.

Parents should select the Child Care Provider Request Form under the "I want to request someone else's CORI" heading.

“Use all resources available to you to ensure you have the best possible picture of a person's character before allowing them into your home and in contact with your children,” Ryan said.
