Owner sought after pit bull puppy found emaciated in a crate near Boston cemetery

BOSTON, Mass. — Officials are searching for the owner of an emaciated pit bull puppy who was left abandoned in a crate near Mount Hope Cemetery last Wednesday.

A good Samaritan found the 5-month-old puppy on Walk Hill Street on June 15 and delivered him to the Angell Animal Medical Center around 5:20 a.m., according to MSPCA’s Law Enforcement Department.

The pup, named PJ, was wearing a blue, gray, and yellow collar manufactured by Fuzzyard. He had no ID tags or microchip, making it difficult to find the owner.

“Right now there are no leads so we’re likely going to need the public’s help in determining whether an owner can be identified,” said MSPCA Law Enforcement Director Tom Grenham.

The puppy was suffering from Parvovirus, which is a highly contagious and deadly virus that leads to rapid dehydration. PJ was rushed from Boston Animal Control to Angell where vets gave him plenty of fluids and supportive care. According to MSPCA officials, PJ is doing much better today.

“We realize that sometimes people find themselves in desperate situations. We hope that others reading this article understand that our first and foremost goal is to help when people and animals are in need,” said Director of Adoption Centers and Programs at the MSPCA, Mike Keiley. “Leaving an animal outside in a crate and hoping that someone may find and bring him to a shelter or veterinary hospital is not the best approach.”

PJ’s veterinarian bill is likely to exceed $3,000, so the MSPCA has set up a page to help with the costs. Click here if you wish to donate.

He may be available for adoption as soon as 7 to 14 days.

Anyone with information about the puppy’s owner is asked to call MSPCA’s Law Enforcement at 800-628-5808.
