Theft, vandalism being investigated at MBTA parking lots on South Shore

WHITMAN, Mass. — Some Commuter Rail riders on the South Shore returned home Monday to find the wheels stolen right off their vehicles and the windows smashed.

Patrick Barry commutes into Boston every morning for work. He got off the train at the Whitman Commuter Rail stop Monday evening to find all four tires stolen off his Honda Civic.

"They just want the rims. They aren't going to go out and buy them. They'll rip them off the good cars," Barry told Boston 25 News.

Barry's car was left on blocks and his car windows were smashed in.

"In Whitman, I didn't see this coming," Barry said. "A bunch of low lives here."

On the other side of the tracks, a woman got off the train to find her Lexus SUV on blocks.

There are no cameras in the parking lot.

Tires and rims on these vehicles can cost more than $400 each, depending on the make and model.

Lisa Brolin shared pictures with Boston 25 News of a car window smashed at the Abington MBTA Commuter Rail parking lot Monday. She said the owner told her he didn't have anything valuable in his car.

A tow truck driver told Boston 25 News the tires are very easy to steal. A thief could remove them from a vehicle in two minutes or less. He suggested people buy locking lug nuts, calling them an "effective deterrent."
