Medford police arrest suspect connected to string of armed robberies

MEDFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police arrested a suspect in connection with a convenience store robbery Saturday night, and later linked him to a string of similar crimes throughout the city over the past month.

Just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday night, a masked gunman robbed P's Variety on Central Avenue. The convenience store had been robbed twice before, on March 4 and March 20. Because of an rash of armed robberies in the area, Medford police had increased patrols in the area, and officers were able to chase the suspect after he left the store, and arrest him.

After arresting 25-year-old Kevin O'Connell Jr., they recovered a fake gun, along with money stolen from the store.

Since Feb. 19, multiple armed robberies had been reported in Medford, Malden and Everett, with similar suspect descriptions in each.

In one case that FOX25 previously reported on, the suspect arrived in roller blades, showed a gun and demanded money from the cash register.

Medford police say after being arrested, O'Connell Jr. admitted to committing seven armed robberies in Medford, and  two armed robberies in Malden.

He is set to be arraigned in Somerville District Court on Monday.
