Man wins $1 million from lottery scratch ticket given as post-surgery gift

DORCHESTER, Mass. — Attleborough resident, Alexander McLeish won a $1 million prize in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” instant ticket game.

In early November McLeish had open-heart surgery and while recovering his friend sent over a get-well card with three instant tickets enclosed, including the big winner.

He began to scratch the ‘letters’ area of the ticket and the first three letters revealed were A, W, and M, which are his initials. Not only did his initials appear on the winning ticket but as he continued to scratch the letters the word “heart” appeared on the bottom row.

McLeish claimed his cash prize of $650,000 at Mass State Lottery headquarters in Dorchester on Friday.

His $1 million winning ticket was purchased at Quickeez Beer, Wine and Convenience store located at 60 North Main Street in Carver. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for the sale of this ticket.
