Man suspected of setting 4 fires in Pittsfield caught at Canadian border

Phillip J. Jordan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Massachusetts man suspected of starting four fires, including one that destroyed a home, has been arrested while trying to cross into Canada.

Pittsfield police say 58-year-old Philip Jordan was arrested Sunday by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Agents at the border crossing at Highgate Springs, Vermont.

Authorities had been searching for the Pittsfield man since Saturday night when he allegedly set the four fires. No one was reported injured.

One of the fires gutted Jordan's own home. Police say his family members lived at the two of the other sites where fires were set.

Pittsfield police, city fire investigators and the state Fire Marshal are investigating.

It's unclear when Jordan will return to Massachusetts or if he has a lawyer.
