Manchester water main breaks, spills 1 million gallons of water

MANCHESTER, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Water was restored to homes in a Manchester neighborhood Friday morning after a water main break spilled 1 million gallons of water into the streets Thursday night.

The spill, which occurred around 8:15 p.m. Thursday, caused flooding and a number of sink holes. The flooding immediately washed away a section of Goffe Street, according to Manchester Police. Nearby homes and buildings were evacuated for the night. Residents took shelter at the William Cashin Senior Center.

Manchester Police said 21 people were been displaced because of the flooding. Crews worked overnight to fix the line, which was finally replaced early Friday morning. A number of roads remained closed Friday morning as crews worked to backfill the large sinkhole that remained in the middle of the street.

A dozen buildings were damaged by the flooding. Officials have said the road will most likely be closed for the remainder of the day.

Power was also cut to the area but has been restored.
