NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A man was spotted stealing a donation jar meant for a sick child, and Boston 25 News has learned that the suspect is believed to have committed the same crime at a different store.
Surveillance video shows a man walking into Charlie’s Convenience Store in New Bedford and pointing at a few items behind the counter.
Then, while the clerk had his back turned, he’s seen grabbing a jar next to him and stuffing it into his coat.
Another store just a few blocks away said they also had a donation jar stolen by the same man.
The jar was filled with money that had been collected over the past few months that was meant for a 3-year-old boy from Bangladesh named Raya, who is suffering from liver cancer.
The store owners, also from Bangladesh, said both jars had a combined total of about $500.
“This made me very sad,” Nurul Amim said. “I helped somebody. It made me very sad.”
Amim said every day he, along with customers, put money into the jar to help Raya, a friend’s child.
New Bedford police said they have the video and are working to help catch the thief.
Charlie’s Convenience Store also captured video from outside the store, and was able to record video of the suspect’s car.
Police said they believe they can track the license plate number.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police.
