BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The man killed by return gunfire after shooting a Boston officer at point blank range Friday had a violent past. FOX25 investigated and found that 41-year-old Angelo West was arrested back in 2001.
At about 2:55 a.m. on July 23, a trooper saw a man, later identified as Brent Stevenson, take part in a drug sale on Charles Street. Stevenson fled when he saw the officer, but didn't get far.
The officer found and arrested him, but then saw another person grab an item officials believe Stevenson had discarded. The other person turned out to be West.
With help from another officer, the pair chased after West and were able to stop him as he crossed Stuart Street. West had a semi-automatic handgun, which both officers immediately tried to grab. As they wrestled for the gun, West fired a shot before it jammed. Neither officer was hit, but a window molding in front of a restaurant was. West refused to give up the gun until additional officers arrived.
West was treated for injuries he sustained during the struggle and charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession. Stevenson was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
West was killed by return gunfire after shooting Boston Officer John Moynihan in the face Friday.
