Man accused of 'suicide by cop' attempt gets 7½ to 10 years

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 7½ to 10 years in prison after he shot at officers in what police say was an apparent "suicide by cop" attempt.

The Lowell Sun reports 23-year-old Darriss Newton pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of armed assault to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling and related offenses.

Police say Newton was pulled over in Lowell at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 27, 2014. They say Newton got out of his car and fired at the officer using a semi-automatic weapon.

The officer returned fire, striking Newton twice.

Police say Newton fled and when he was found, begged the officer to "finish him off" because he had "nothing to live for."
