QUINCY, Mass. — A Lowell man faced a judge Friday, nearly three months after police say he violently raped a woman getting off an MBTA train in Quincy.
Sean Soares, 29, appeared in Dedham Superior court where he entered a not guilty plea to charges including kidnapping, aggravated rape, strangulation, and more.
The charges stemmed from an incident on April 18 when surveillance video at the Wollaston MBTA station shows Soares allegedly follow a 25-year-old woman he didn't know out of the station.
"She walks two blocks to this neighborhood where this defendant grabs her, drags her into a yard, throws her on the ground and he's on top of her strangling her,” prosecutor Danielle Piccarini said.
According to prosecutors, the woman broke free and ran but Soares wasn't far behind.
"The defendant chased her, caught up to her, grabbed her, dragged her down a paved area behind a second home where he then proceeded to rape her,” Piccarini said.
After about an hour, prosecutors say Soares became apologetic.
"He told her that he was sorry, that he didn't mean to hurt her,” Piccarini said. "He asked for directions on how to get home.”
FOX25 has learned Soares' criminal record dates back to 2008 and includes 16 arraignments beginning with operating under the influence and leading up to this most recent rape charges.
Between those facts, the MBTA surveillance, and the video police say Soares shot on his phone of the assault, defense attorney Melissa Fournier wasn't left with much of a defense at all.
"I would ask that you set bail today without prejudice,” she said to the judge.
