‘We do not have a path’: Ricardo Arroyo concedes primary race for Suffolk DA

Ricardo Arroyo

BOSTON — Ricardo Arroyo on Wednesday conceded to incumbent Kevin Hayden in the primary race for Suffolk Country District Attorney.

“With nearly all the votes counted it is clear we do not have a path to victory,” Arroyo said in a tweet. “Running for Suffolk County District Attorney was always about ensuring those most impacted by our systems are treated with the humanity and dignity they deserve.”

Hayden edged out Arroyo, gaining nearly 54 percent of the votes on the Democratic side.

“I am grateful for the residents of Suffolk County who supported my vision for a more just system and will continue to use my life to advance those ideals. This race may be over but the work continues,” Arroyo added.

Last week, Massachusetts senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu pulling their support for Arroyo.

Past allegations of sexual assault published by the Boston Globe had sidetracked Arroyo’s campaign in the days leading up to the state primary.

Arroyo was not charged. He says the first time he heard about the allegations was when the Boston Globe reached out to him.

Hayden will have an unchallenged bid in November’s general election because there are no candidates for Republican nomination for district attorney.
