Vigil held for 13-year-old girl killed, teens injured in Worcester crash

WORCESTER, Mass. — A community in Worcester came together Saturday night, one week after a horrible crash.

Dozens gathered at the spot where it happened on Main Street to light candles and say prayer for the four teens who are still recovering and the 13-year-old girl who died.

“It’s not just kids that were impacted; we have been impacted by this as a whole as a community,” said Latoya Lewis, who helped organize the vigil Saturday. “We want to give them a safe place where they can come with their friends and embrace each other during this difficult time.”

The community also set up five canvases for people to sign and send well wishes to each of the victims of this crash.

One of them is still in critical condition, while the 13-year-old girl was laid to rest Saturday.

“Everything that’s here tonight, those kids that are also in the hospital that are hanging on – we want to be able to send this over to their families, so when the kids do recover and they do get home, they get to see all the support that the community had for them,” said Lewis. “The love that we’re sending, the prayers that we’re sending out to them.”

Police say the five teens were in a stolen white SUV last Saturday night speeding down Main Street when they struck two other cars at the intersection of Chandler Street.

Three of them were ejected from the car.

Police say the driver was under the age of 16, and they’re still investigating what happened while this community continues to grieve and come together for the families.

“It’s important that we offer our support and prayers to the families and the children involved,” said Mayor Joseph Petty. “They are our children of the city of Worcester and that’s why we’re here tonight.”
