Record warmth Friday following record lows last week

BOSTON — Well if you don’t like the weather in New England…

We all know the saying, but it certainly holds true. Last week at this time, New Englanders were bracing for record cold, now we are talking record warmth.

In fact check out this temperature swing — last Saturday, Boston had a record low of -10 degrees. Meteorologist Shiri Spear is forecasting it to get up to 60 degrees today. That’s a 70 degree swing in less than a week! And let’s remember, the average high for this time of year is 38 degrees.

Boston could meet or beat the record for February 10th — which is 60 degrees. Several other cities in New England will be flirting with that record, including Worcester and Manchester, New Hampshire. Here are the current records:

Boston: 60 in 1990

Worcester: 58 in 1909

Providence, RI: 58 in 1909

Concord, NH: 55 in 1955

Manchester, NH: 56 in 1955

The warm weather has been kind of the norm this winter. The warmest day so far in 2023 was January 30th when Boston hit 58 degrees. The last time it hit above 60 —was still during this current winter — which was December 30th when Boston got to 63 degrees. Even this past November, Boston reached 76 degrees!

Boston had its second warmest January on record, ending up 8 degrees above average.

Worcester set a new record for its warmest January with an average temp of 34.7 degrees, beating out its previous record that was set in 1913.
