New York doctor arrested in Boston for allegedly upskirting shoppers on Newbury Street

BOSTON, Mass. — A New York State doctor appeared in a Boston court on Wednesday, charged with secretly recording up women’s skirts on Newbury Street. A Newbury business helped police crack the case. Boston police say they found more than 20 videos on the suspects phone -- all showing recordings of women and their private areas while they were out shopping here on Newbury.

Dr. Damon Deteso appeared in Boston court charged with dozens of charges involving illegal recordings and photos up women’s skirts and shirts why they were shopping on Newbury Street. Police say Deteso faces a total of 36 criminal counts. In about 21 incidents, Boston police say Deteso captured private areas of unknowing female shoppers.

Police say Deteso was hiding his phone in a backpack and placing in an area where the person who have to step over.  “You have got to be aware of what’s going on around you and keep your eyes out,” a woman said.

Police say Deteso would sit on these narrow steps going into Anthropologie with his hidden phone next to him -- and captured the illegal images when the victims walked by.  Police say in one incident, a woman was carrying her child at the time. “It’s definitely an infringement on a right to privacy. People shouldn’t have to be worried about it,” one man said.

Boston 25 confirmed Deteso is a a radiology doctor in upstate New York. In a statement, the hospital wrote:

Dr. Damon DeTeso is an employee of Millennium Medical Imaging, which provides services under contract to Saratoga Hospital. Dr. DeTeso has requested an indefinite leave of absence from the Saratoga Hospital medical staff. In light of today’s public allegations, Saratoga Hospital has accepted that request effective immediately and has communicated Dr. DeTeso’s status to his employer. Until further investigation and satisfactory resolution of this matter, Dr. DeTeso will not be conducting any services related to Saratoga Hospital. The professional care and safety of our patients is of paramount importance to Saratoga Hospital.

Deteso entered a pleas of not guilty.  His attorney in court was Philip Tracy, Jr. “We will cooperate with the police and have been cooperating with the DA’s office to find a resolution to the case,” said Tracy.

It’s unclear why Deteso was in Boston. According to court paperwork, a store manager was the one who alerted police which led to the arrest of Deteso.  Deteso will be back in court on May 25. He was released on his own recognizance.
