METHUEN, Mass — A giant sinkhole formed just feet away from homes and thousands of gallons of water flooded a Methuen neighborhood after a nearly 100-year-old pipe broke early Friday morning.
Officers responding to the area of East and Swan streets around 3 a.m. found significant flooding in the roadway.
Video obtained by Boston 25 showed a river of water flowing through the area.
Water crews investigating the cause of the break found an eight-inch crack in a pipe that dates back to the 1930s, according to Daryl Laurenza of the Methuen Water Department.
“We lost about 200,000 gallons of water....A major mess down the road,” Laurenza said. “We’re working on getting the water back.”
Most of the water has been cleaned up but the area will remain blocked off to traffic to allow for major repairs.
About 30 homes in the neighborhood are currently without water.
Water service is expected to be back on by 5 p.m.
