Shoppers in this Mass. city are expected to spend the most money in America this holiday season

NEWTON, Mass. — Shoppers in one Massachusetts city are expected to spend the most money in America this holiday season, according to a new study.

To help consumers avoid post-holiday regret, WalletHub says it used several key metrics, such as income, age, and savings-to-monthly expenses ratio, to estimate the maximum spending amounts for consumers in over 550 cities nationwide.

Bay Staters who call Newton home are expected to shell out an average of $4,233 on holiday-related items this winter, analysts with the personal-finance website found. Palo Alto, California ($3,920), Flower Mound, Texas ($3,531), Milpitas, California ($3,480), and Bellevue, Washington ($3,401) rounded out the top five cities with the largest holiday budgets.

Newton isn’t the only local city that’s expected to spend for the holidays. Here are some other Massachusetts communities that landed on Wallethub’s list:

35. Somerville -- budget of $2,179

39. Cambridge -- budget of $2,136

53. Framingham -- budget of $1,903

79. Quincy -- budget of $1,664

87. Boston -- budget of $1,633
