BOSTON — A road buckled and swallowed a car, and several homes were flooded, after a water main break soaked Boston’s South End early Monday morning.
A 20-inch pipe that dates back to the 1870s burst in the area of Tremont and Northampton streets around 3:45 a.m., according to Boston Water and Sewer officials.
Part of Northampton Street crumbled and a black SUV could be seen wedged in the ditch. Some apartments at 808 Tremont Street were also damaged by the flood waters.
“I woke up and literally my whole downstairs apartment was drenched in water,” a local resident said. “It’s draining now, but it was probably above my ankle.”
A significant amount of water gushed out into the streets for more than 30 minutes before the main was shut off.
Crews are on scene working to identify the break and make necessary repairs.
Tremont Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Northampton Street is closed.
Traffic Advisory: Due to a water main break, Tremont Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Northampton Street is closed, please seek an alternative route.
