Officials recall mung bean sprouts from Western Mass. farm over Listeria concerns

WHATLEY, Mass. — Officials are recalling mung bean sprouts from a Western Massachusetts farm because of the potential presence of listeria.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health says listeria may have been found in sprouts at Chang Farm in Whatley, and the company has now voluntarily recalled all 10-pound bulk bags, as well as 12-ounce retail bags with a sell-by date of May 7, 2023. These products are sold under the brands Chang Farm and Nature’s Wonder.

The DPH also says mung bean sprouts with a sell date beyond May 7, 2023 may also be contaminated with listeria and consumers are urged not to eat any mung bean sprouts from Chang Farm until further notice.

The mung bean sprouts were distributed to stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. The company is cooperating with state authorities and has agreed to suspend operations and distribution of this product pending further investigation.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those who are immunocompromised.

If there are any Chang Farm mung beans in your house, you’re urged to throw them out in a closed plastic bag in a sealed trash can to prevent people and animals from eating them. You’re also urged to wash the shelves or refrigerator they were stored in.
