North Shore town bans all outdoor water use amid extreme drought conditions

DANVERS, Mass. — A town on the North Shore of Massachusetts has banned all outdoor water use amid extreme drought conditions.

Residents of Danvers will not be allowed to fill their swimming pools, wash their cars, run sprinklers and irrigation systems, or water with hoses and cans for the foreseeable future, according to town officials.

Danvers has moved into “Level 6″ water restriction mode. Officials say the town will lift all restrictions when it shifts back to “normal winter conditions” on Oct. 1.

Outdoor water restrictions were instituted when the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection mandated regulations as part of the Water Management Act, due to growing concerns of highly stressed river basins.

Danvers is one of several communities in the Ipswich River basin, which is a stressed water basin that prompted these new regulations.

In a statement, town officials said, “Conserving water proactively will reduce the need for the Town to implement more stringent restrictions later. The small changes you make can make a big difference!”
