Fire destroys popular breakfast & lunch spot in Weymouth

WEYMOUTH, Mass. — A fire destroyed a popular breakfast and lunch spot in Weymouth Monday evening.

Firefighters received multiple 911 calls around 4:30 p.m. to report smoke coming from Newcomb’s Breakfast and Lunch at 924 Broad Street in Jackson Square.

When firefighters arrived, they saw fire in the back windows of the restaurant. They determined the restaurant was closed and no one was inside.

The restaurant, which closed at noon, has been offering curbside take-out during the pandemic.

Chief Keith Stark said extinguishing the fire was a challenge because of the age and construction of the building.

Firefighters from Hingham, Braintree and Quincy were called to the scene to help, while firefighters from Rockland, Randolph and Quincy covered Weymouth’s fire stations.

No one was hurt, according to Stark.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

The building is believed to be a total loss.

“It is not just a loss of a building, though,” Stark said. “Since 1930, each business that has occupied that space has been a vital part of the Weymouth community.”

The restaurant’s owner, Rick Newcomb, told 95.9 F.M. WATD the breakfast and lunch business runs in his family and he’ll find a way to reopen. He said he had been at this location for more than 23 years.
