WELLESLEY, Mass. — Residents and neighbors along a Wellesley neighborhood are calling for a safer streets after a young boy was hit by an SUV while riding his bike.
Wellesley police say they responded to the area of Woodlawn Ave and Oakland street for a motor vehicle crash involving a child on a bicycle just before 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
When they arrived, investigators say the boy was alert and conscious but still taken to a Boston hospital to be evaluated.
A black Mercedes SUV was towed from the scene and the boy’s bicycle was taken as evidence.
Neighbors living along Woodlawn Ave say this exact situation has been a fear of theirs for a very long time.
“It’s very upsetting,” one neighbor told Boston 25 News.
“Every time we come out here, I think about how dangerous this crossing is. it’s not even a crossing it’s a T point. When someone is turning in there from there and someone’s got to leave from here, it becomes tighter and looking this way is so important,” she added.
The same neighbor saw the immediate aftermath of the crash.
“I saw the bike when I was driving away . I saw it lying on the side here,” she said.
“I was telling my son just now when I was driving him saying you know now do you understand why I’ve always been so protective. On our street ,theres lots of little children and they do ride their bikes up and down the street.”
Another neighbor, with a 13-year-old son who also rides a bike, says she’s been flagging this issue.
“We’ve lived in the neighborhood for ten years and it has been a consistent area of opportunity where cars cut through from Washington Street on their way to Route 9. Cars are just going too fast around a corner to be able to appropriately slow down for kids who are in the way and there are kids all around our neighborhood,” she said.
“I hope this encourages the town to consider what safety precautions could be put in place to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again,” she added.
Right now the driver isn’t facing any charges but Wellesley police tell Boston 25, that could change depending on what this investigation reveals.
As for those living in the neighborhood, they hope officials consider making Woodlawn Ave a one-way or adding speed bumps to slow drivers down.
“There is only so much we can do. As a mother of a 13-year-old boy, understandably so, he’s out on his bike, he’s out on his scooter and sometimes in the spirit of just being a kid some of these safety precautions just fall to the waist side. So, we really need a partnership with those who cut through the neighborhood to make sure they are thinking about the kids who could be on the street playing,” a neighbor said.
Police say the boy is expected to be OK.
